Is it illegal to road hog (hold the 2nd lane of a dual carriageway or motorway when the nearside lane is clear)?
Yes it is illegal and the Garda can pull you over, it does not generate points at present.

Should I glance right and left as I pass through traffic lights at any time?
Yes, this is a life saver. Glance right and left into the junctions of roads controlled by traffic lights as you approach them, as you go through them, because someone one day will jump the lights at speed and it is the most vulnerable side of your car that gets hit. It is a sad thing to say, but you only die once! You don’t get a second chance. So it may be you look for 7 years and then suddenly. SO ALWAYS TAKE THAT RIGHT & LEFT GLANCE! IT COSTS NOTHING EXCEPT YOUR LIFE!

Why should I look at travelling vehicles front wheels before I act?
They will always tell what direction the vehicle is going, stopping or accelerating.

When can I enter a yellow box junction, when my exit is NOT clear?
When you want to turn right, you can enter the box while waiting for a gap from the opposite direction. DON’T enter the box if you block traffic that has the right of way. It is illegal, Garda enforceable and a fineable offence.

Should I stop at a stop sign or stop line?
You must stop at a stop line or if no stop line at the stop sign, even if you where the only car on the road in all Ireland! That means the front of the car must stop very near to or on the stop line for a split second with the wheels stopped, not 2 metres back and then roll over the line. Its illegal, Garda enforceable, 2-4 points and fineable.

I’ll enter the hatched area of a roadway/lane (cross-hatching with a continuous line around it),  so I can get past a slow moving vehicle/bike!
Illegal, Garda enforceable, 1-3 points and fineable. If a vehicle is  stationary you can pass it, as it is deemed that you are passing it and not overtaking it.

I’ll go into a continuous line cycle lane to pass the car turning right!
Illegal, Garda enforceable, 1-3 points and fineable.

I’ll use my fog lights at night in normal weather so I can be seen and see better!
Fog lights can only used in severe fog conditions where visibility is below 100 metres. So illegal, Garda enforceable.

What are DRLs?
Daytime Running Lamps, not to be confused with Fog Lamps.

What are the legal requirements of DRLs?
They must be set to a height of between 250mm and 1500mm. They should be set not more than 400mm from the outer edge of the vehicle. They must not be positioned where they dazzle other road users and must switch off when side lamps or main lights are used.

What is the most clearly expressed in the STOPPING RULE
Always drive so that you can stop safely within the distance you can see to be clear.

How do I approach traffic lights that offer a directional box for the right turn, a round green light and a right arrow green light?
Approaching the lights when they are red you are first in the queue to turn right. On the showing of the round green light you proceed with caution to the directional box and turn using Look, Assess, Decide, Act. If you are second in the queue on the showing of the round green light you wait behind the STOP LINE  until the first car clears the box. Then you enter. If the green right arrow appears then just proceed with caution and LADA.

How do I approach traffic lights when  turning right with no filter light?
Approaching the lights when they are red you are first in the queue to turn right. On the showing of the round green light you proceed with caution to the centre of the junction on the right of your lane  up to the imaginary line (make sure your front wheels are pointing straight, so that if you are rear ended you are not pushed into oncoming traffic) and turn using Look, Assess, Decide, Act. If you are second in the queue on the showing of the round green light you wait behind the STOP LINE  until the first car clears the junction, so you are not caught over the stop line if the lights suddenly turn red, as it is an offence.

Can I pass a very slow moving farm vehicle on a single white line, double white or a cross hatched area with a continous line around the cross hatching?
In Southern Ireland you cannot pass a slow moving vehicle, animal, bike etc unless it is stationary. If it is stationary it is deemed that you are passing it and not overtaking it.
In Northern Ireland and UK you can pass a slow moving vehicle as long as it is not moving above 10MPH or 16KPH.

When I pass parked vehicles, even if I do not cross the white line do I have to signal?
In Southern Ireland you must signal right when passing parked vehicles at all times, unless it is parked near to a junction where there is a right turn. You should also signal left when completing the manoeuvre if you cross the white line.
In Northern Ireland and UK you do not have signal at all. The reason is the car behind you will also see the parked vehicles and know that you must move out to continue. That is the same to be said about approaching or on coming vehicles. The standard procedure in these two countries is that you do not signal unless it is of benefit to other road users.
